Cuteness won me over this week. Ground squirrels are very appealing anyway, but baby ones with their frail vulnerability even more so.
This youngster had ventured outside the burrow on its own to soak some early morning sun. I took this photo in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve in central Botswana.

Nice photo. This must be my week for squirrel photos. Here’s another one I liked: https://davidmsphotoblog.com/2018/07/10/squirrel-in-dappled-sunlight/

Thanks for the link – I also really like the photo. Such character in such small creatures.

I love squirrels! We have grey, red, chipmunk and groundhog in the garden but none can beat the cuteness of your little ground baby. He looks quite fragile sitting there. I guess we are all that if the truth is faced ….

How lovely that you welcome all those squirrelly visitors to your garden – all cute in their own way, and all fragile too, as you say.

‘Cute’ seems to be the word, so I’m interested in de Wets Wild’s comment. Lovely photo.

Again, your species is quite different from ours. The ears on your model are so tiny and the markings are so much whiter. It makes him/her especially cute.

These ground dwelling squirrels are adapted to arid regions where they excavate and live in burrows under the sands, where small ears would be more appropriate. The colour of these squirrels can be variable depending on region (but they are usually not that dark), and there is a species that does not have the stripes. In fact the full name of this species is Striped Ground Squirrel, which I should have mentioned!

Isn’t he just the cutest little thing!?
We’ll soon be posting a few photos our son took of ground squirrels that’s going to dent their cutesy reputation just a little… 😉

Thanks Abrie. As usual I am struggling to keep up with the blogosphere – I have to burn the midnight oil to do my posts as it is – but I hope to check out the new and interesting photo challenges that are springing up in response to the demise of the WPC. I hope to visit soon.
