A Grey Duiker picks its way through fallen leaves as it forages at the margins of a patch of mistbelt forest in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.
I decided to alter the original photo with a Watercolour Pencil effect using the Photoscape photo editing programme so as to enhance the sylvan atmosphere and the delicate almost fairytale demeanour of this shy little antelope.

What a lovely delicate little creature it is. It’s a wonder and a marvel to see the different inhabitants of your bit of the world. So different from ours, with some similarities. Our antelope tend to like wide open grasslands where they can see for miles with their amazing eyesight. They run extremely fast, too, if I remember right. According to Wikipedia our ‘Pronghorns’ are not even true antelopes. Whatever that means?

There are many species of antelope in Africa – many of these are adapted to savannah habitats including grassland. I have just looked up your pronghorn. What a fascinating creature.

We caught glimpses of our pronghorns on our recent trip. Haven’t had time yet to see if I caught anything worth posting. We went to almost an extreme opposite from the rain forest to high (altitude) desert. I have much to sort through… perhaps once our rains come (they seem to be quite late returning this year.)

How lovely to see pronghorns. I have so enjoyed seeing the photos (so far) of your spectacular trip. Enjoy sorting through your photos – you have a treasure trove I am sure. Hope your rains come soon.

I am sure that your photos more than do your trip justice and choosing what to leave out is probably challenging! They photos you have posted are really lovely. Hope you do get rain. We are having lovely gentle rain here, but it is surprisingly chilly (by our standards) with it. The river frogs are gently clicking outside as if in appreciation of the rain.

The bunch of Mantis goggas invading our one bush full of golden flowers all changed clothes one day last weekend and dissapeared. I guess they have flown to your garden.

I am keeping an eye out for them. You were so lucky to see them all gain their wings. I am still sad that ‘our’ flower mantis vanished before it got its wings and could fly.

How fortunate you are to have seen one so clearly. I like what you have done to the picture too.

Beautiful capture. They are such elusive creatures just getting a shot is a triumph.

Thanks Ark. Yes more usually they dive off into the undergrowth.

In have one shot – very poor – taken on a similar leafy path when we down at the coast many moons ago. Blink and they’ve gone!
