Another in the series of flower portraits, this is a cluster of flowers of the Dais cotinifolia.
For obvious reasons it is referred to as the Pompom Tree. It is also known as the Pincushion Tree. It is a relatively small tree, ideal for gardens, and it flowers in early summer. In our area it drops its leaves at the end of winter and acquires new leaves in late spring.

I love these trees! They are not so common so close to the coastline in the Cape where we live, but I revamped a garden down the road where there were a couple of the Pompoms in a row….sheltered behind a large Milkwood, which, I believe helped to protect them from the direct North- Westerly winds. Great picture once more, Carol.

Thanks Suzette. That’s great that they coped when being sheltered by the Milkwood. They can be quite temperamental. The most prolifically flowering ones I have seen, oddly enough, were in a row at the edge of a large office car park.

Our trees are sporting tight buds still well sheathed. Before long they will be a mass of pink blossoms. This is a lovely photograph of one.

Thanks Anne. It seems that ours are a little later than yours. The leaves are still developing and no flower buds yet.
