I found this photo of seagulls and terns when writing my post on the suburbanisation of the seaside. It was taken last year at a beach in the Western Cape, South Africa.
Taking a photo of a large group of birds or animals should be easy, but it is hard to get a focal point, and impossible to avoid cutting animals off at the margins. I hope though that this photo conveys something of the grace and bustle of these birds on the seashore.

This is a beautiful and energy-filled image. I think you’ve captured the ‘the grace and bustle’ of the birds perfectly! When I was on the homepage of your blog, this image just jumped out at me and I couldn’t resist clicking through. 🙂

I think your seagulls are better looking than ours. 🙂

I think there is a Hartlaub’s gull and Grey-headed gull in the photo, amongst all the terns. Kelp gulls also occur on this part of the coast. Perhaps you get Kelp gulls too?

This is an excellent shot and even more so as it provides numerous focal points, much like a jig saw puzzle – which, incidentally, this would be perfect for.

Yes, the focus can be tricky, but this looks very sharp, lots of nice detail. A little blurring also helps conveys the frenzy of activity.

Thanks Liz. The coming and going is constant but some find time to sit quietly and preen amongst all the action!
