As the Weekly Photo Challenge series has come to an end, I thought I’d still like to post a single photo each week, alongside one of my usual posts.
For me, one of the challenging aspects of the Weekly Photo Challenge was keeping (mostly) to the confines of our own garden when coming up with an image to fit the theme for the week. So now that the series is over, I thought why not allow myself to post a weekly photo from further afield, a photo taken beyond the confines of our suburban garden, though still sticking with the notion of letting nature back in? So each week I will post a nature photo that I find in my archive.
So here is the first photo in my series dubbed Weekly Photo Find. It is of a Red-headed Finch that I photographed in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve in Botswana, in April 2016. He and a small group of other birds were hanging out near our campsite.

I think I need to start a weekly mountain find 🙂 you’re moving on. I must get my photo idea moving as well

What an amazing bird and a wonderful capture on your part! We don’t seem to have anything that colorful (perhaps a Piliated Woodpecker comes closest)! ‘m thinking that your birds are more colorful, generally speaking.

Thanks Gunta. We do have a lot of colourful birds here in southern Africa, but I have no idea how to compare to elsewhere. I have seen photos of your pileated woodpecker and it is most striking.

I’m glad you are doing this. And I love that finch. We have very similar birds here – the house finch features the same almost prehistoric head and red plumage though theirs extends down the breast also. Your picture is quite remarkable.

Thanks Osyth. I have just looked up the House Finch and so I can see what you mean about the similarity, and I am starting to see how the head might seem to be almost prehistoric 🙂

My husband was blown away by that picture of yours which I showed him yesterday. He said ‘not surprised you follow this one’! 😊

I too an in awe of the detail in your shots and I’m delighted that you’ve chosen a way to continue sharing your photos with us. This little bird is so clearly a finch, with his blunt bill. He looks like he’s wearing armour… or fish scales, such is the beautiful symmetry of his breast feathers.

Thanks Sandra. I love how the subtle details of the breast feathers are almost more impressive than the dramatically red feathers.

Oh, thanks for keeping up your own personal challenge! I’m still on the hunt for another one, as I quite enjoyed the process of having to turn my mind to the fitting one of my photos to the challenge in hand, and I’ll share any sites I find. I would never have found your posts without the WP one, so I’m sad it has ended. This is a delightful photo of yours. I’m always in awe of the quality of the wildlife images you produce.

Thanks so much Margaret. Yes, I also enjoyed the challenge of finding an image to fit a theme and I am also sorry the WPC has ended. Thought I’d try a more relaxed approach for a time. It will be interesting to find out about other photo challenges that are out there.

I always enjoy seeing these birds – usually associating them with interesting places such as Botswana and the Kgalagadi, so am delighted to see them as regular garden visitors whenever I go to Boksburg! This is a lovely photograph.

Thanks Anne. I also don’t think of them as garden birds, but how nice to know that in some regions they are 🙂

Those intricate feathers on his breast are very interesting. They remind me of fish scales!
