The story of survival depends on the strength of family bonds that endure, as epitomized by these Vervet monkeys, even in a hostile world.
This photo that was taken through our garden gate, is posted in response to the Weekly Photo Challenge with the theme ‘story’, and shows Vervet monkeys in the street enjoying a brief few minutes of R&R in the shadow of a neighbour’s wall.

Fascinating creatures. And to think that I get excited about a bunny and a few songbirds in the back yard!

They are fascinating, and sadly so often misunderstood. I get excited about songbirds in the back yard, and I would be very excited to see a scrub hare (more likely than a wild bunny in these parts) in the neighbourhood 🙂

A charming image, and very suitable for Mothering Sunday which is celebrated in the UK tomorrow.

Thanks Margaret. Here in SA the American and more secular (commercial?) Mother’s Day is more commonly observed.

Sadly, it’s overwhelmingly the case here too.

A stunning image! Your post reminds me how often these monkeys are targeted for wandering on to human properties (that were once ancient monkey foraging paths) and how few people rarely consider the ripple effect that harming one individual causes to the whole group and all connected systems.

Thanks. Yes, I agree that many people underestimate the strong social bonds that monkeys form.

Thanks. I think that we can learn a lot from animals if we choose to, and perhaps especially from other primates.

I sure agree. I don’t know a lot of primates up close, but you really gave me a new awareness with your post. 🙂

Thanks Nikki. So many people only see them when they are stressed and harrassed. If they could watch Vervets when they are calm and relaxed maybe they would see how special they are.
