The invitation in the Weekly Photo Challenge is to show us something cheeky … “go find a little irreverence in your world”.
The dictionary definition for cheeky: “impudent or irreverent, typically in an endearing or amusing way”, suggests that characterising something as cheeky requires a certain level of interpretation. So, in this photograph taken on our back veranda, how do you read the pairing-off of these locusts on a metal sculpture of a leopard? Perhaps impudent, perhaps irreverent, but is it art?

That the locusts arranged themselves that way isn’t art, my opinion. That you took a photo of the event IS art, in my opinion. The first is happenstance, the second is a conscious act of capturing it. It’s a very cool thing, no matter how you look at it!

I also tend to think that art is not random. Perhaps art is the framing rather than the ‘event’? Anyways, I think the locusts were pretty cool too, and the question was a little cheeky ☺

I had to think about the “art is not random” idea and I agree, there have been some “happy accidents” in the art world. It’s not so cut and dried, I guess. It was a cheeky question. 🙂

Brilliant. Happenstance or art? Who cares?

Brings to mind the quote: “Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.” – Thomas Merton. Love it!

Thanks. Lovely quote. Likely the locusts would agree 🙂

I wasn’t sure if the locusts were part of the sculpture – an amazing composition!
