As I focus on this Red Tail moth, it appears to be focusing in turn on my camera lens.
As I adjust my focus, the orange underside of the Red Tail moth (Hypopyra capensis) can be seen to contrast with the dark wings.
But when I focus on the moth from above it can be confusing. Is it a moth or is it leaf? I have to keep adjusting my focus and even then, it can be hard to tell.
This post is in response to this week’s photo challenge, with the invitation “to show us your favorite in-focus and out-of-focus moments”. For other bloggers images on this theme click here

Brilliant top photo, outstanding! I never seem to be able to get them to stay still long enough!

Thanks so much, Dr B. Most moths and butterflies are incredibly flighty, but this one seems happy to stay put. Perhaps, as it looks like a leaf, it has evolved to behave like a leaf, and stay in one place 🙂

Yes it does. Strange to feel somewhat intimidated by a moth!

Thanks Sherry. The brightness of the colour of the underside of the moth is always a surprise.
