These delicate fungi appear suddenly, when the temperature and humidity are just right.
Equally suddenly, when the humidity alters, they disappear just as unexpectedly, quickly collapsing and shriveling to nothing. They are truly evanescent features of the woodland, emerging from the dead wood on which they grow and feed. This year, at the bottom of our garden, there was an unusually large colony of fungi on dead wood in such close proximity that I dubbed it the dead wood society, even though their mysterious community was fleeting.
As far as I can work out these fungi are one of the 150 or so species in the large and cosmopolitan Crepidotus genus.

I find fungi trully remarkable. How they appear as if out of nowhere, showing their beautiful forms to the world, and then they can quite suddenly be gone and not seen again. This is a lovely photo, Carol. I like the worm’s eye view perspective from which you have captured the shroom’s magnificent details and form.

I love the delicacy of these particular fungi: though few of the ground growing ones are exactly tough.

Yes most do shrivel away, though the more robust ones dry and shrink slightly but retain their shape, looking almost like exoskeletons. Definitely worth trying to find out more about them. Perhaps my next obsession? 😊 We have had no electricity for two days so now its back up its nice to be reconnected!

Thanks Nikki. Yes, I think that they do have an enchanted forest feel about them. I didn’t see any faerie folk however! Unless one counts the flies that they attract 🙂
