Here in the southern hemisphere we a have been stacking our woodpile with dry wood in readiness for the winter that lies ahead.
All of this wood comes from trees felled or trimmed in our own or in a friend’s garden. Most were alien species, but, sadly, some indigenous trees were felled because they were too close to buildings or plumbing. We make a point of planting more trees than we fell, in our own garden and the adjacent area.
We use the wood for heating our living space, burning it in our small wood-burning stove. We also use it for heating water and for cooking one-pot meals.
This picture of our densely packed woodpile is my response to this week’s photo challenge theme “dense”, highlighting texture as a core element of photography.

Glorious colours and textures – melding together in a densely packed whole. We’ve just lit a fire here – still not warm enough to go without one every night but it won’t be long coming.

….. whereas we have only a few miserly logs left in case of a cold snap before the warm weather really kicks in. There’s little more comforting than a dense pile of logs such as yours. So satisfying, if exhausting, to stack. Sadly, we have to buy our wood, and I’m not sure I’d have what it takes to be a logswoman.

I confess I just help with the stacking. My husband is the one to wield saw and axe to get the wood down to size. I tried practicing using the long-handled axe, but proved to be a danger to the world at large, and not least to the axe 🙂 or should that be 😦 ?

Thanks. In the meantime I am enjoying the autumn, despite the fact that it is unusually hot and forecast to be 38 degrees here today. Perhaps we won’t be needing the firewood.

Good heavens! That’s what I would call an Indian Summer …. just been out for a lovely stroll in the city and found a beautiful clutch of pigeons feasting on some bread. I might not have noticed them but for your lovely reminder to watch them 🙂

There is nothing like a nice stack of firewood to feel a sense of security. Spring is here in the N. hemisphere and ours is almost gone. The process will begin again soon.

Yes it is nice to have a pile of seasoned wood in readiness. Enjoy your spring and the summer to follow. It is good to appreciate the cycle of the seasons.
