What catches the eye is not so much the bright red collar as the iridescent green sheen of this Southern Double-collared Sunbird.
“Iridescent” is defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary as “shining with many different colours when seen from different angles”. The shining effect of iridescent feathers is greatly enhanced by sunshine.
This little bird was photographed in our suburban garden when it was taking nectar from a Freylinia tropica bush in full flower – a sight to brighten anyone’s day. ★

Thanks Pete. He is a gorgeous little bird. These sunbirds don’t just rely on nectar but eat insects and spiders too.

Such a stunning shot of this Southern Double-collared Sunbird. He looks very proud of his colours, proud of his beauty. He has every right to be 🙂 Great timing, great shot, beautifully done 🙂

Hi Mabel, thanks for your kind comment. I have just read your interesting post on dressing modestly. I don’t suppose one could call this little bird a modest dresser! 🙂

I like your sense of humour 😀 This bird looks like a bit of a show-off…but in a good way. Not every bird looks like it 🙂
