What catches the eye is not so much the bright red collar as the iridescent green sheen of this Southern Double-collared Sunbird.

“Iridescent” is defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary as “shining with many different colours when seen from different angles”. The shining effect of iridescent feathers is greatly enhanced by sunshine.

This little bird was photographed in our suburban garden when it was taking nectar from a Freylinia tropica bush in full flower – a sight to brighten anyone’s day.
